Preah Vihear holds the keys to understanding the Khmer culture

The construction of the Preah Vihear temple started in the late 9th century.  It was originally known as Sreysikharesvara, which means “the power of the mountain.”  It has always been a great importance to the Khmer culture because it was used as a place of worship.  It is also known as a sanctuary for study and reflection on the heavens and earth, along with divinity of Shiva.  It is the ultimate sacred temple for the Khmer culture.

Khmer Rouge – Communist Party that ruled in Cambodia for four years

Khmer Rouge ruled in Cambodia for only four short years, but its impact on the Cambodian society was disastrous.  Khmer Rouge was led by a man named Pol Pot to begin with and was in power from 1975 to 1979.  In the four years that the Khmer Rouge was in power, over twenty percent of the population was killed, which does not include the affects of after their rule.

The cruel ruling of Khmer Rouge affected the Cambodian way of life for decades.  While Khmer Rouge only ruled in Cambodia for less than four years, Cambodia is just now beginning to fully recover from their terrible actions.  The Khmer Rouge has scared many citizens of Cambodia for life because of what they did.

How Pol Pot came to power – Interesting facts on how Pol Pot came to lead Khmer Rouge

Pol Pot started out started out the same as the rest of us, and he was born in 1928 in Kampong Thum Province in Cambodia.  He went to technical high school in the capital, Phnom Penh.  Then in 1949 he went to study electronics in Paris.  It was Paris where he joined the French Communist Party and Marxist-Leninists.  He also became a part of the Khmer Students’ Association (KSA), which was said to be about two hundred students who belonged.  Pol Pot and other members wrote a letter to Sihanouk, the leader of Cambodia at the time, and said that he was the “strangler of infant democracy.”  Due to this action, a year later KSA was closed.

Culture of Khmer Rouge – What they believed and why they did the Awful things they did

Khmer Rouge was headed by Pol Pot from the time of creation in 1963 until his death in 1998.  Khmer Rouge was a section of the Communists Party of Kampuchea.  From 1975 until 1979 Khmer Rouge ruled over Cambodia and caused great devastation among the Cambodian population.  Khmer Rouge is responsible for the mass Cambodian Genocide, which was one of the worst genocides of its kind in the twentieth century.

The Geography of Cambodia

Cambodia is located in Southeast Asia on the Indochinese peninsula.  On the North side it is bordered by Laos, and Thailand borders its Northwestern side, while to its South and Southeast side it is bordered by Vietnam.  Its Southwest side is the coastline to the Gulf of Siam and Thailand.  The country has a total land area of 176,519 square kilometers (68,154 square miles).  The capital of Cambodia is Phnom Penh.
